Boys Cross-Country: Blackford Invitational

Over the weekend, the Boys Cross-Country team competed at the Blackford Invitational. While some of the team was battling injuries as well as illness, they finished 9th in the Open Division. Senior Alex Cushman finished with a time of 16:19. Brandon Long and Ben DeVoe posted impressive times with 17:06 and 17:47, respectively. Complete results of the race can be found here. The teams next meet is Saturday, September 18 at the Yorktown Invitational.

Norwell Football

This past Saturday the Norwell Knights Football team traveled to Lucas Oil Stadium to play the Bellmont Braves. For the first half of the game the team was able to put up a strong defense and was ahead 9-0. The game ended with a win for the Braves at 17-9.

KILLERS movie review

The movie KILLERS (Rated PG-13), starring Kathrine Heigl and Ashton Kutcher is an action/adventure/comedy that throws everthing at you in a big bang! Jenny (Heigl), a young woman on a vacation meets Spencer (Kutcher) who just happens to be an agent who wants nothing more than a normal life. After meeting Jenny, Spencer is sure he can live the normal life...until a bounty for 1.5 million dollars is on his head and ends up dragging Jenny for the ride. Enjoy KILLERS, it will absolutely kill you with laughs!

V-Bally Ball

The Norwell Lady K Volleyball team (11-3) are swimming in the "W's" this week. Tuesday the Lady K's took the Bishop Dwenger Saints to five games, emerging victorious, 3 games to 2. The very next night, the Lady K's hosted the South Side Archers and sent them home with a royal spanking, 3 games to none. The Lady K's started out struggling this year, but seem to have hit their stride. Let's all cheer on the Lady K's as they make our school proud.

Norwell Boys Soccer

Norwell's Boys soccer team had two games last week. First they played at Marion on Tuesday. The varsity team ended up losing this game 0-2. And the JV lost 0-5. But the Knights came back with a better showing on Thursday at New Haven. The varsity team won 2-0, and the JV came up just short at 0-1. Jacob Meyer and Adam Lambert each had goals in this game. Jacob was assisted by Briar Bolinger. The varsity team's record now stands at 5-4, and the JV are 0-8-1. This week the Knights host East Noble today and Northrup on Wednesday.

I'm undecided on the college I want to go to, but I know I want to major is psychology and I plan on getting a masters in counseling.

Because I want to help people.

What's your most embarrassing moment?

When I was four I decided to climb a tree to retrieve a pine cone. Well, needless to say I fell, but not all the way to the ground. My underwear caught on a branch, leaving me suspended in mid air, screaming 'help!' The worst part is the entire time my brother was screaming for my parents to go get the camera.

And lastly, what advice would you give to freshman?

Enjoy high school because its going to fly by. I know everyone says that, but its true. Don't be too serious. Read a good book. Don't do drugs.

Boys Soccer

Last Thursday the Norwell's boys soccer team played at Jay County. The varsity team played first and claimed a victory. They won four to zero. Goals were scored by Briar Bolinger, Luke Batdorff, Aaron Seman, and Paxton Lehman/ Jason Miskin. JV played the second game. They fought hard throughout the game and came close to winning but unfortunately did not. So, the final score of their game ended up being one to zero in favor of Jay County. This game improved the Varsity's record to 4-3 and drop the JV team to 0-6-1. The next game is tomorrow Tuesday, September 7 at Marion.

Friday Night Football

The Norwell students were so inspiring that some of the Carroll fans tried to join in cheering for the Knights!

After Norwell's touchdown the student section rushed down to the track to do push ups.

Norwell Students came out to support the Knights last Friday night This past Friday the Norwell Knights played the Carroll Chargers. The game ended in defeat with a score of 14-6. The Knights fought to the end and held off the Chargers until the third quarter when the Chargers scored their first touchdown.

Lack of Motivation

I have no motivation to study for school. Every year I try to set goals to study more but it just never happens. What can I do? This lack of motivation is starting to affect my grades. I know I need to study, but I just don't. Please Help!!

Dear Lack of Motivation,

I suggest you find a special place where you can just be alone and relax. Maybe like your room with music on, or outside on a great day. Sometimes with sports, chores, and school your life can be hectic, try rewarding yourself for doing your work. (for every 1/2 hour of studying, 10 minutes of texting?) Encourage yourself and say "I'm almost done!!" Have a set time everyday and adhere to it strictly school related so you can't plan other things around it. Let me know how things go? :)

Powder Puff Football

That's right, this year there will be powder puff football during homecoming week. The game will be either Tuesday the 13th, or Wednesday the 14th. It is flag football and the game will be out on the football practice field. If you are a junior or senior girl interested in playing, go to the office to pick up a permission form. The permission forms have to be turned in next Tuesday. As of right now it looks like there are going to be two senior teams and two junior teams. Make sure you come out and enjoy the game. Cost to get in will be $1 and make sure you bring your own seating.

Golden Knights

Golden Knights has started up again! For anyone who doesn't know what Golden Knights is, I'll explain. It is Campus Life based program on Wednesday mornings. This year the group meeting at 6:45 am in the planetarium (the double doors in the hallway behind the auditorium). Breakfast is served at each Golden Knights, followed by a devotional usually led by Tony. Golden Knights officially started up this past Wednesday and will be taking place on a consistent basis from now on. Everyone is welcome to come and check it out!

A Week of Victory for the Lady Knights

The Lady K's (9-3) have gotten 3 more victories this week. Monday, the Lady K's beat the Southern Wells Raiders, 3 games to none. The first two games were a landslide victory for the Lady K's, winning both games 25-10. In the third game, Southern Wells fought to stay alive, getting their first lead of the night. The Knight's fought back, winning 27-25. Tuesday evening the Lady K's played the Wayne Generals, defeating them 3 games to 1. The Lady K's started the night off by winning the first game 25-16 to which the generals responded by taking the next game, 27-25. Determined not to lose this game, the Lady K's won the next two games, 25-23 and 25-17. Thursday night the Lady K's dominated the South Adams Starfires, winning 3 games to none.

Norwell Boys Soccer

Last night the Norwell boys JV and Varsity soccer teams played Bellmont. The JV team was the first to challenge the braves. A scene from their game is pictured above. The knights struck first in the first half. Keifer Windle scored on a beautiful shot. So, the JV knights left the first half with a one goal advantage. The second half turned out to be a hard fought battle. Both teams pushed hard throughout the last thirty five minutes, and both teams had several good shots on goal. However, Bellmont was the only team to turn on of those shots into a goal. They tied the game up part of way through the second half. The Knights fought for another goal to take the win but came up short. So, the game ended in a one to one tie. The Varsity game turned out better results for Norwell. Briar Bolinger was able to capitalize on a scoring opportunity to allow the Knights to walk away with a one to zero victory. Norwell's next game is tomorrow, Thursday September 2. They take on Jay County.

Lately I've been having trouble handling all of my responsibilities. Between my job, school, and chores it seems that I never have enough time. Not to mention I never get enough sleep! Do you have any suggestions for me that could help me juggle all of my responsibilities?

Dear Busy B.,

Firstly, I want to stress the importance of sleep. If you don't get enough sleep then you won't be able to complete any of your tasks in a timely or efficient manner. It may seem like staying up until midnight will help you get ahead, but all that it really does is make you more tired the next day, creating a vicious cycle of monotony. Talk to your parents about chores. See if you can work something out so you're both pleased. Perhaps talk to your boss and see if you can cut back your hours, so you can fit in more school and sleep.

Cross Country: Bi-County Results

On Saturday the boys and girls cross-country teams competed at the Adams-Wells Bi-County Meet. The girls finished 1st, while the boys finished 2nd. The next meet is the Bellmont Conditioner.

Picture Retake Day!

Picture Retake Day will be Tuesday, September 21. If your child did not have his/her picture taken during registration, he/she MUST have it taken for the student id. If you wish to have your child retake his/her pictures, be sure to send the old picture package(s) with your child on Sept. 21.

Registration Day

Remember this year there will be registration day for the high school. Parents and students can come Aug. 2 from 12 – 7pm or on Aug. 3, 7am - 3pm. Parents can register their students for school as well as buy gym uniforms (if needed), order yearbooks, and etch. Students get their class schedule, their locker, and their yearbook photo taken. So remember to dress nicely as this is the only picture day (aside from retakes).

As an added bonus for coming to registration day, families will be qualified for a special registration day discount on this coming year’s yearbook. If you reserve your copy of the yearbook during either registration day, you get $20 off the yearbook. Payment must be in cash or check. Don’t have the money right now? No problem! Just reserve your copy at registration day at the yearbook table and pay by Labor Day. Yearbooks usually cost either $40 or $50 dollars so don’t delay if you want your part in this limited time discount.

Countdown To End of School

"Marble Sorters" visit OES

Students of Mr. White's Project Lead the Way engineering class visited Ossian Elementary School to teach Mr. Harkless's third grade class about their marble sorters.

Mrs. Harkless's third grade class is currently taking part in a Region 8 project themselves. They are creating their own inventions out of provided Lego kits provided by Region 8. First, they created cars to race. Now they are sketching out invention ideas to create.

While I was there, Mrs. Harkless reminded the children of a very important aspect of creating their own invention.

"Remember kids, you are inventing something to make work easier," said Harkless. "That is your ultimate goal."

The only main difference between what the third graders are doing compared to the high school Project Lead the Way students is a matter of gears. The gears OES students are creating are manual ones that need to be turned by hand, while high school students gears are moved by electricity.

First, Project Lead the Way students showed the elementary engineers some of the preliminary projects they were asked to create before beginning their marble sorters. The preliminary projects brought to OES were a drill press, an elevator, and a pantameter.

After showing off some of their beginning projects, all of the students went to the computer lab to see videos of what the marble sorters were like before they were torn down.

The Sleepless Knights took over Norwell Friday night

This past Friday, Norwell's new improv troupe, The Sleepless Knights, made their debut. Instead of having a spring play like every other year, Susan Kahn, director, did something a little different this year. The show was held in the high school cafeteria as a coffee bar, complete with refreshments and sweets. Every table was filled. Many sat in chairs scattered amongst the little empty space left or stood along the back wall. Tickets were sold for $5. The Sleepless Knights are Sam Tomten, Robert Connett, AJ Reynolds, Harley Link, Chloe VanRyn, Brandon Havener, Sabastian Hubble, Tyler Miller, Tim McBride, Blake Lampton, and Cody Heckber.

Norwell's Sleepless Knights Performance!

Be at the Norwell High School cafeteria tomorrow, Friday April 16th, at 7 pm and be prepared to laugh your pants off :) tickets will be sold at the door and are only FIVE DOLLARS. So be there or be lame. All funds raised will go to benefit Haiti. Public input sessions for school cuts

Public input sessions will be held on April 14 at 7 p.m. at Norwell High School in the cafeteria and on April 19 at 7 p.m. at Ossian Elementary in the cafeteria. Students and parents are invited to come voice their opinions about possible changes or suggestions of how to reduce the budget.

ART SHOW CONTESTANTS!

Norwell's young engineers play with marbles

On Tuesday, students in Mr. White's Project Lead the Way engineering class showed off marble sorters that they had been working on for the past three weeks. All marble sorters were connected to a computer program. They all included three engines to get separate the marbles by color into different bins, as well as one additional engine for the light scanner. Although each creation was extremely different from the others, the marble sorters were a success, all of them working 100% on showday.

Wells County Child Protection Program

Body Safe Program

Norwell High School will be participating in a county-wide "Body Safe" program for all middle school and high school students and their parents. Terry Hall, a retired Indianapolis Police officer, will be speaking at the programs. The following topics will be discussed:

• Respecting yourself and others
• Preventing molestation
• How to say no to molestation
• What to do if molestation occurs
• Sexting
• Internet safety
• Sexual Harassment
• Date Rape
• Younger girls dating older guys
• Saying no and voicing when you are uncomfortable

The parents' meeting will be held Monday, April 12th at 7:00 pm at Bluffton High School cafeteria. Child care will be provided. Student meetings will be held on Wednesday, April 14th at Norwell High School. The first session will begin at 9:30 and end at 10:10, and the second session will begin at 10:15 and end at 10:55.

NHS Prom

Norwell juniors and seniors, it's that time again. Prom is just around the corner. It will be held on May 8th, and this years theme will be Las Vegas. Tickets cost $25. The Prom is at Memorial Coliseum from 8-11; pictures begin at 7pm.

Lunch Games?

Now that the weather is getting some what nice, students have started to spend a little more time outside. The most common pass time is Hacky Sack, however with these guys, there's a kicker, with a combination of Four Square. Lately as a reporter and student I have noticed students losing interest in common school activities, and today when i was taking their pictures it sparked a thought that why don't we start up lunch games? Expanding on that, i mean why cant we have students run possible Four Square games or etc? A Leprechaun at Norwell!?!

In addition to students donating their money to the MDA (see post below), each student places his or her vote onto the window wall by the cafeteria. The vote go towards one of the most priceless things a high schooler could ask for: to see one of their beloved teachers dressed up like a leprechaun. Shamrocks for muscular dystrophy

During the month of March, student council will be selling shamrocks for muscular dystrophy. Shamrocks cost one dollar and will be displayed along the cafeteria wall.

National FFA Week !

During this year's National FFA Week, FFA participated in a miraculous number of things, going above and beyond what has been done in past years. Each day had a specific dress code, featuring FFA T-shirt, Official Dress, College team spirit, camouflage, farm spirit and also Carhart day. The FFA held a breakfast for all of the NHS staff members on Friday morning and created a petting zoo on Wednesday.

They also had a rec night to celebrate the accomplishments that they have had this year already. On the last day, there was a tractor drive in in which students like Stephanie Meyer, Bradley Heckber, Mitchell Teusch, Kayla Taylor, Nick Wilson, Shelby Meyer and many other members participated. Special thanks to the president, Jenna Steed, Ag teacher, Mr. Caldwell, and advisor, Mrs. Kolhagen. They did a phenomenal job throughout the week. It was, overall, a major success and a proud week for Norwell FFA.

BPA State

Shoot for Success

This Saturday, twelve Norwell High School students are going to Indianapolis to compete in Business Professionals of America State competition. The competition lasts from Sunday morning to Tuesday afternoon. Thea Smekens, Katie Bunch, Kristen Springer, Ben DeVoe, Adam Datema, Kyle Isch, Alex Eichler, Jeff Shatto, Kimberlee Bussey, Rachel Towle, Shane Feichter, and Brooks Caley are all headed to state. They are competing in various individual and team competitions. If they place in the top 5, top 3, or top 2 (depending on the category) they will get to move on to Nationals in Anaheim, California.

Make sure to wish them good luck for this weekend!

A New Scene at Norwell

Due to last year's budget cuts, there will not be a spring play. However, Ms. Susan Kahn has assembled an Improv troop over the past month that will be doing a performance.

Improv is acting without any premeditated ideas or lines. Improvisational games have always been a light hearted highlight of Ms. Kahn's Norwell theatre classes. One comparable example is the TV show, "Who's Line Is It Anyway?". Forms of this TV show thrive throughtout many other countries.

Initially, around 35 students tried out. Over the series of three Roundtable periods on Friday, Ms. Kahn was able to cut down the number of students significantly. Now, thirteen students remain.

At the start, the idea was to have a small group of students work on and improve in the art of improvisation each Friday during Roundtable. Ms. Kahn is now putting on an improv show in place of the cancelled spring play. Between now and the beginning of April, the students will practice and work on trust and the many, many rules that play into the art.

The performances will be on April 16 and 17. Times will be announced at a later date.

Dancing to Victory

The Norwell Show Choir is headed toward an undefeated season. Both Girls' and Mixed groups have been awarded grand champions in three of their competitions thus far. Numerous choirs have been brought down by the dancing Knights at schools all over the area. The show Choir will be performing at Shelbyville this Saturday competing against numerous large and small schools.

School Wide Fundraiser

All orders and money for the Otis Spunkmeyer Cookie dough sales is due Wednesday, March 3. Remember for every 12 items you sell, you receive an envelop of either $10, $20, or $100!

Due to Cancellations

Due to cancellations the last student day, as of now, will be Friday, May 28, 2010. Third quarter will end on March 17.

Congrats Girls Swim Sectional Winners!

Norwell's Girls Swim team has won many achievements lately. Below is a list of winners and hopefully soon-to-be winners.

Swim first place individual & relays team finishers go on to compete at state; in diving, first through fourth go on to compete in Regionals.

Leah Huggins took third and will compete in the regional diving competition on Tuesday night at Hamilton Southeastern!
Stephanie Bussey took first place in 200 IM & will swim at state.
Dani Thomas took first place in BOTH of her events - 100 meter butterfly & 100 meter breaststroke! She also broke Norwell High School's record!
They have two relay teams competing at state: 200 meter Medley Relay (Kimberlee Bussey, Stephanie Bussey, Dani Thomas & Kelly Brewer) and 400 meter Free Relay (Kelly Brewer, Kimberlee Bussey, Brooke Cossairt & Dani Thomas).

Lady Knight's Senior night is this friday Febuary fifth! The girls will be dueling the Southern Wells Raiders at 6:00 for JV and 7:30 for varsity. Be at the game this friday to support your undefeated, conference champs and favorite girls basketball team!

If you have yet to see the Lady K's in action time is running out. Tonight the ladies are traveling down to Jay County High School for Sectional Prelims. There will be several other area schools competing tonight to try and make it back Saturday to finals including Bluffton High School. The top 12 move on to Saturday. Come wish our Lady Knights luck as they try to win the sectional title and go to state!!!!
