Help Relief Efforts in Haiti

If you have been paying attention to the news, then you know that earlier this week Haiti, the poorest nation in the western hemisphere, was hit with 7.0 magnitude earthquake. Because of the poverty, there is no building codes, so when the earthquake struck many building collapsed with workers in them. There has been lots of death and destruction in a country that has no money or resources to help. Right now as we speak help is pouring in from all over the world. Right now organizations are begging for help. They are asking only for monetary donations for right now. Since the earthquake hit at the country's capitol, relief efforts are having a hard time unloading their supplies. Also there is very little space to store supplies and there is no framework to handout the supplies. If you wish to make a donation right now the Red Cross and United Way are accepting donation through texting.

The donations through texting works by you texting a certain number and on your next phone bill there will be an extra cost. This extra cost goes in full to either the United Way or Red Cross. Remember the donations you make could be tax deducible.

If you wish to donate and help:

to donate $10 to the United Way text "HAITI" to 864833 (UNITED).

to donate $10 to the Red Cross text “Haiti” to 90999

The organizations have already raised over $3 million dollars through texts. Every bit helps, and right now this country can use all the help it can get. All donations are backed by the U.S. State Department. Remember the poorest American is still 10 times better off than the richest Haitian, and right now over 3 million people have been affected by the largest earthquake in Haiti in over 200 years. So please give help any way you can.

If you wish to have another way to help, Norwell is collecting items in 3rd block classes. Norwell will being collecting items until Friday, January 22. The three classes that collect the most items from the list below will receive pizza & pop on Monday, January 25 during lunch. All collected items will be sent to Florida for Haiti delivery by Missionary Flights International.
